The Most Holy Virgin Love said to the venerable Mary of Jesus:
“In this life men have a great fear and dread of all punishment and of every sorrow, because they have these before their eyes and can grasp them with their hands; Sin, on the other hand, does not frighten them or frighten them. For those who are wholly occupied with visible things do not look at that which necessarily follows sin, that is, eternal punishment in hell. And although this punishment is already included in sin itself, and is most closely connected with it, yet the human heart is so heavy and lazy that it is intoxicated with sin and does not heed the punishment, because it does not understand hell with its senses.
True, a man could see hell by faith and “lay hold of it with his hands”; But he does not use the faith as if his faith were dead, and as if he had no faith at all.
Ah, the miserable blindness of men! Oh, the terrible laziness and carelessness which you have brought to the ruin of so many souls, endowed with reason and capable of obtaining eternal happiness! There are no words to adequately express the terrible and frightful danger that befalls those who do not remember hell in life!”
