After receiving Holy Communion, St. Mechtilde saw before her a wardrobe wonderfully adorned with gold and jewels, bright white inside, and having three compartments.
In the highest compartment were the golden vessels; in the middle expensive robes, in the lowest a very tasty dish.
This wardrobe signified the heart of man adorned with the love of virtue and good deeds. The golden vessels in the highest compartment signified the hearts of the saints who were ready to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit. We must always imitate these hearts by making our hearts capable of receiving the graces of the Holy Spirit.
The brilliant white color of the interior signified that the soul, desirous of pleasing God, should have a pure heart and be free from all earthly things, and should not judge the works of others. The garments in the second compartment signified the works of Christ’s Humanity. They were of four colors: the first were purple decorated with golden clover leaves; the other was green, with golden roses set in them; the third were of the color blue, and after them were golden stars; the fourth were red as a ruby, adorned with golden lilies.
When the saint wondered what these garments would mean, she received the answer: “As you want me in your heart, you will clothe me with such a garment. If you praise My childhood, which contains the Majesty of the entire Trinity, you will clothe Me with a purple robe, adorned with golden clover leaves. If, on the other hand, you contemplate My youth, you clothe Me in a green robe adorned with golden roses, which signifies the delight of My divinity, which I have come into the world to impart to men, according to the words: “And my love be with the sons of men” (Proverbs 8.32).
The saint said, “What, O Lord, do garments as red as a ruby mean?” The Lord answered, “My life is soaked with blood; and My most innocent Death is marked by golden lilies, when you meditate on My Passion and Death, you clothe Me with this garment.” The saint said, “What is meant by the food in the lowest range?” The Lord answered: “The exquisite taste and splendor of grace which the soul receives in this life in the Sacrament of the Altar, which contains in itself all grace and sweetness. Everyone who partakes of this sacrament is nourished by me, and I feast on it!”
