On one occasion the Lord said to St. Mechtilde:
“Look, wherever you are, you draw Me to you by your sighs. Just as the human heart cannot live without air, so the soul cannot be considered alive without My Spirit, for without Him it is dead. As the heart of the body has three acts, one by which it breathes air, another by which it nourishes itself with food and drink, and a third by which it nourishes the other members, so the heart of the soul has a threefold activity. Through the first, he draws My Divine Spirit into himself so that he may live in grace. On the other, he eats the Word of God, sermons, the scriptures, as if he were expensive food. By the third, it nourishes the limbs in the performance of works of love.
