On one occasion St. Mechtilde saw an open hell beneath her, and in it unspeakable misery and gloom, and as it were, cruel serpents, toads, wolves, and dogs, in general the forms of wild beasts terribly tearing and tearing each other apart. The saint said to the Lord, “O Lord, who are these poor people?” The Lord said to her, “These are the ones who have never thought of me with sweetness for an hour.”
