A nuptial garment woven from pure hearts
On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus:
“Love of my soul! What kind of garment is this, without which no one can enter into Thy wedding?” That hour the Lord showed her a robe wonderfully woven in purple, and worked with white and gold, and said, “Here is the nuptial garment! It is made of white, that is, of pure hearts, of the violet of humility and of the gold of God’s love. Anyone who wants to have such a garment must be pure in heart. No evil thought should voluntarily reside in his heart, and all that he sees and hears should serve him not for evil, but for good. He should also humbly submit to his superiors for the love of God; he should love God with all his heart, and esteem all created things little in comparison with God. In the end, he should not love anything that distances him from God, but push him away from himself and run away from it.”
