The Lord Jesus said to St. Bridget:
“Pure intentions of the will strengthen man. While man wills nothing but the Divine, and works only for the honor of God, he longs with all desire to part with the world and be united to God; it is such a
will that strengthens man in good and increases his love for God. It makes the world contemptible to him, strengthens his patience and his hope of heavenly happiness. Then everything that happens to him, he accepts with joy.
Secondly, man’s good will draws out all rottenness. What is the pernicious rottenness of the soul but pride, lust and delight of the flesh? But if the rottenness of pride or other vice enters the heart, it will come out of it, if
a man thinks thus: “Pride is vanity, because a man who receives graces should not glorify himself, but the Giver of these graces; Concupiscence is vain, because all that is earthly must be forsaken; the delight of the flesh is but a foul odour, and therefore I do not want it, but rather follow the will of my God, whose reward will never end, whose goods will never grow old.” Then all the temptations of pride and lust are gone, and good will is strengthened.
