On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus: “What is the use of a book containing her revelations?” The Savior said to her,
All who seek me with faithful hearts will find joy in it, those who love me will be more kindled in my love, and those who are sad will find comfort in it.”

How Love Connects Man’s Soul to God

On the day of the Solemnity of Pentecost, when the Mass of the “Spiritus Domini” (Spirit of the Lord) began, St. Mechtilde heard a voice saying to her:
“Hear, O my soul, and rejoice! If the Holy Spirit fills the whole world in this way, you will not be excluded either.” The saint thought to herself: “Perhaps these are not the words of God, but only the words of my soul, which consoles itself?” But the Lord said to her, “These are my words, for your soul is mine, and my soul is yours, just as we read in the case of Jonathan and David, that their souls were merged together. Your soul is even more firmly bound to Mine by the bond of love, as I will show you today.”
With these words she received two wings and with their help she flew upward, and when she came to an unbelievably great luminous light, she rested there.
And an angel came to her with great reverence, and greeted her, and said, “Noble virgin! Prepare yourselves, for soon your Bridegroom will come.” To this the saint replied: “I do not know how to prepare myself properly, but if I am to be worthily prepared, the Beloved of my soul must prepare me Himself!” And at that moment the King of glory stood before her in the form and adornment of the Bridegroom, and clothed her in a white garment, and said, “Accept the robe of My innocence, which I give thee as eternal recompense.” Then he adorned her with a robe of pink color, saying, “I have prepared this garment for you out of My Passion and out of your sufferings.” Love also stood before the Lord in the form of an extraordinarily beautiful virgin. The Lord looked at her kindly and said, “You are what I am!” But because the saint thought that she was not wearing a cloak, she spread out her cloak and covered the Lord and St. Mechtilde with it, so that the saint appeared clothed in Love. And the cloak of love was covered with different colors, and so large that it was enough to cover a multitude of people. And Love said, “As many threads are in my cloak, so many consolations I give to those who come to me!”
The saint was so dissolved in her Beloved that it seemed to her as if she had the same heart with Him. Then the Lord said to her, “Now command what you will.” The saint answered: “The word ‘command❞ does not befit me, for if I had maternal power, I would call upon all creatures to praise you with all their might, with all their charm and with all the art they possess!”
