On one occasion Saint Mechtilde saw the Lord seated on a throne, around whom walked Love in the form of a beautiful virgin and sang: “I have walked around the circle of heaven by myself” (Sir 24:8). From these words St. Mechtilde understood that Love itself had conquered the omnipotence of the Divine Majesty, had poured out His sweetest goodness completely, had completely conquered the severity of Divine Justice, and had turned it into gentleness, and bent the Lord of Majesty to the misery of our exile. (That is, it caused the Son of God to come into the world for our redemption.)
