On one occasion the Love of God appeared to St. Mechtilde in the form of a lovely virgin and said to her:
“Adam’s sin could not be forgiven without Humanity and without the Blood of Christ. That very hour, when Adam sinned, I decided to mediate and took all the blame upon myself. By constantly moving the Heart of God, I induced Him to be kind and did not leave Him alone, until the moment when I took the Son of God from the Heart of the Father and placed Him in the womb of the Virgin and Mother. As Mary walked through the mountains to greet St. Elizabeth, St. John, in the womb of his Mother, was filled with such great joy by the presence of Christ that from then on he did not like any earthly joys. Then I wrapped the Son of God in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, and I took Him to Egypt, and I stirred Him up to all that He had done and suffered for men; until I nailed Him to the Cross and thus appeased the wrath of the Father and united man with the God of the inseparable propitiation of love.”
