God is unchanging and true.
The Lord Jesus said to St. Bridget:
“Why did you become alarmed that this man (probably someone close to or close to the saint) said that My words to you were false? Will I be worse because of this man’s rebuke, or better if he praises me? For I am unchangeable, and can neither be diminished nor increased, nor do I need praise. And the man who praises Me does not benefit Me, but himself. I am the Truth, and therefore no untruth has ever come out of My mouth, nor can it ever come out of My mouth. For whatever I have spoken in a spiritual or carnal way through the prophets and other friends of Mine will come to pass, as if it were My intention at that time.
For just as in My Divinity I assumed My Humanity in one Person, so I have often spoken from the side of My Humanity, insofar as it was subject to My Divinity. On another occasion, I have spoken from the side of My Deity, insofar as it was the creator of My Humanity, as is evident from My Gospel. Though the two of these ways of speaking My speak are regarded by the slanderers and the ignorant as different, yet these words were true according to the Truth. Nor was it without purpose that I should present many things mysteriously, for justice demanded it, that My divine sentence should sometimes be kept secret from the wicked, and that every one of the pious should eagerly await My grace and receive a reward for his waiting, and that when My sentence was pronounced for a certain time, all would not cease to expect and love it for the length of time.
And I have promised many things that have now been taken away from men by their ingratitude. If they had given up their malice, I would, of course, have given them what I had promised. Therefore, let not anyone be troubled if anyone calls My words false. For what seems impossible to men is possible with Me.
My friends also wonder why My words are not immediately followed by deeds. That’s for good reason too. Was not Moses sent to Pharaoh, and yet did he not immediately show his signs? Why? For if these deeds and signs had taken place at once, neither the hardness of Pharaoh nor the power of God would have been revealed, nor would the subsequent miracles have been manifested.
And so it is now. Therefore, be of good courage! For the plough, though it is pulled by oxen, is driven by the will of Him who directs it. In the same way, My words, although you hear and know them, will not be done according to your will, but according to My will. Therefore you should submit all your will to My will and say, ‘Thy will be done, O God!’
