In the apparitions of the venerable Mary of Jesus we read:
“When Lucifer saw that both his first parents had fallen, and that the inward beauty of original grace and justice had been changed into the ugliness of sin, he began to rejoice and triumph indescribably before the rest of the evil spirits. Soon his joy was gone, for he saw how the most gracious God, in His love, was merciful to both guilty (quite contrary to what he, i.e., Lucifer himself wished). He saw how God had given them time to repent, and how he had given them the hope of being forgiven and regaining God’s favor, and that Adam and Eve by their sorrow and sincere sorrow might have earned it. He saw that God had again given them the beauty of His grace and bestowed upon them His friendship. All this plunged the whole hell into the greatest terror, for it knew what perfect contrition could do.
Lucifer’s terror was heightened when he heard God’s sentence of the guilty, which he expected to be quite different. What tormented him the most was the threat that the Most High uttered against him, which was: “A woman will bruise your head.”
