On one occasion the Lord said to St. Bridget:
“I complain of those who have pledged themselves to be mine and have turned their backs on me. For I am their Creator, their Redeemer, and their Helper. I created their body and their members. Everything in the world, I have arranged for their benefit. I redeemed them with My Blood. Through My Passion I have acquired for them an eternal inheritance. By defending them in all dangers, I give them power to occupy and to work. And they have turned their backs on Me. My Passions are of no avail. They neglect My Words, through which My soul rejoices and rejoices. They despise Me and resolve in their hearts and in all their desires to give up their bodies and tear them apart for the praise of men, to shed their blood for the fulfillment of their passions, and to die willingly for
worldly and vain things and for the words of Satan.
Yet, even though they have turned their backs on Me, My mercy and My justice are still upon them. For by My mercy I protect them from falling into the possession of Satan, and by My justice I bear them patiently.
And if they still want to repent, I will receive them with joy, and I will go out to meet them with joy.
