On one occasion the Lord said to St. Bridget:
“I am the true King, and no one but Me is worthy to be called a King, for from Me all receive glory and power.” I Am, who judged the first angel when he fell through pride, lust and jealousy. I Am who judged Adam and Cain and the whole world, bringing a flood because of the sins of men. I Am, who allowed the people of Israel to be taken captive, and to be brought out of it again in a miraculous manner and with miraculous signs. In Me is and has been all righteousness.
It is without beginning and without end, and never diminishes with Me, but remains always true and unchangeable, and since at the present time My justice seems to be a little milder, and God seems to be more patient in His government, this is not a change in My righteousness, which is never subject to change, but a greater manifestation of My love. For I judge the world now with the same righteousness and with the same truth of judgment with which I once permitted My people to be in captivity in Egypt, and by virtue of which I sent them afflictions in the wilderness. But before My incarnation, there was the Love I had in righteousness, as if it were covered by light, or as if veiled by clouds. After I had assumed humanity, the law was changed, but justice did not, indeed, Love through the Son of God appeared more clearly and in a more abundant light, and in a threefold way.
First, by the relaxation of the law, which, because of the disobedient and obstinate, was hard and hard to keep the proud in check. Second, because the Son of God suffered and died. Thirdly, because the judgment of mercy seems to have been postponed longer than before, and more lenient towards sinners. For very severe and severe was the justice of our first parents, in the waters of the deluge, in the death of those who were slain in the wilderness. The same righteousness is with Me as it has always been. Only now I show a little more mercy and love, which formerly because of wisdom and mercy were hidden in justice, although they were hidden secretly, for I have never administered justice without mercy, nor mercy without justice.
I have loved man from the beginning, but no one heeds or cares for My love. And because I am just and merciful, I exhort those who have turned away from Me to seek My mercy, lest My righteousness, which is strong as a mountain, burning as fire, terrible as thunder, and swift as an arrow from a taut bow, may not overtake them.
