St. Mechtilde writes in her apparitions:
“Oh, woe to you, sinner, how miserable you are! You are a suicidal destroyer and the destroyer of all good and true utility. A good man benefits greatly from evil things, for when he sees another sin and fall, he is careful not to enter into the same misfortune. And a good man will be improved by bad things, so that out of them good arises. A bad man, on the other hand, becomes an even worse one; If he sees good works and examples, he despises them and those who do them, and he delights above all in his own perversity and wisdom.
