On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus: “What is the use of a book containing her revelations?” The Savior said to her,
All who seek me with faithful hearts will find joy in it, those who love me will be more kindled in my love, and those who are sad will find comfort in it.”

The Soul of Man Compared to a Coin

The Most Holy Virgin Love once said to St. Bridget:
“A coin minted by God is different from that minted by Satan. The Divine Coin is gold, that is, shiny, soft and costly. It is the same for every soul that bears the image of God: shining in God’s love, soft as gold, still precious from good works. A good soul is melted by the power of God and fortitude by many trials, and by love and patience it becomes all the more precious to God the more humble, the more patient and the more attentive it is to itself. But Satan’s coin is of copper or lead; copper because it is only similar to gold. It also has hardness and extensibility, but not as much as gold. The soul of an unjust man is the same, because he thinks of himself as just, judges his fellowmen, and exalts his own interests above the interests of others. He is inflexible to be humble, soft in his actions, difficult to acknowledge his shortcomings and wrong ideas, he is wonderful before the world but contemptible with God. Satan’s coin is also made of lead; Its shape is ugly, it is soft, supple and heavy. Just as the soul of the unrighteous is ugly in evil inclinations, heavy in the lusts of the world. Like a reed flexible to all that Satan puts at heart, and often more inclined to sin than Satan is to tempt.
