On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus: “What is the use of a book containing her revelations?” The Savior said to her,
All who seek me with faithful hearts will find joy in it, those who love me will be more kindled in my love, and those who are sad will find comfort in it.”

How the soul should feel painfully through sin the loss of God

The Most Holy Virgin Love said to the venerable Mary of Jesus:

Men take care of goods according to the value they attach to them, and they ascribe value to them because they consider them goods. After all, there is only one true Good, and that is God; all others are an illusion. That is why man should also know and highly value this one Good, the highest Good. And he can properly love and appreciate Him only when he has tasted Him, when He has come to know Him sufficiently, and when He has placed Him above all creatures. Appropriate to the degree of this appreciation and this love is also the sorrow for the loss of this good.
How great, then, should be the sorrow of a soul that has lost God through sin! Though carnal people do not comprehend the magnitude of this loss; yes, in their foolish blindness, they value earthly goods, illusory and illusory, and are content to possess them; They are also sad only when they are saddened and inconsolable if they lose it. But they do not esteem and pay no heed to the true and supreme Good, because they have never known or tasted Him.
It is true that My Most Holy Son prevented this terrible ignorance which comes from original sin. He merited people’s faith and love, so that they might know and enjoy this Good, which they had never seen with the eyes of the flesh. Unfortunately, people don’t do anything out of love and seek the first entertainment they get; But faith remains idle and dead in men, and consequently useless. And so people live in darkness, as if they had received only fictitious and doubtful news about eternity.
Fear, My daughter, this danger, which can never be sufficiently contemplated. Be constantly on guard against the enemies of your soul who never sleep. Meditate day and night on what you ought to do, so that you do not lose the supreme Good which you love. Surrounded by invisible enemies, you should not sleep or rest. And if your Bridegroom can hide himself from you, wait for him patiently, seek him with untiring solicitude, for you do not know his secret judgments. And in the time of his absence and trial, always have the oil of love and pure intention in readiness, so that you may not lack it, and that you may not be rejected with the foolish virgins.
