God’s mercy on the human race fallen by original sin
On one occasion St. Bridget of the Lord said:
“Just as I created angels for my glory and for my splendor, so I created man for my glory. I gave him a body as a spiritual temple, in which I placed his soul like a beautiful angel, for the soul of man has, as it were, an angelic virtue and strength. In this temple was I, his God and Creator, in whom man found joy and delight.
Then I made him a second temple, out of his own rib and like him, a woman, and I decreed that their children should be as perfect as Adam was at once.
This honor to which I called man was despised by the first men, and they gave themselves over to Satan, and coveted honors higher than that which I had given them. And when they had disobeyed, My angel came upon them, and they were ashamed of their nakedness, and immediately felt the lust of the flesh, and suffered hunger and thirst. Now they have run out of Me; as long as they had Me, they felt no hunger, no lust of the flesh, no shame, but I Myself was good to them all, all sweetness and perfect joy.
And when Satan rejoiced in their fall and destruction, moved by pity, I did not forsake them, but showed them mercy. I clothed them because they were naked, and I gave them bread from the ground. For the evil lust which Satan, when disobedience increased, stirred up in them; I have given to their seed the soul of My divinity, and what Satan has whispered to them for evil, I have exchanged for good.
I, their Creator, promised them that I would be born of their descendants.
But when the anger of men increased, I still showed My justice to sinners, and My mercy to My chosen ones, because I was gracious to them.
I saved them from destruction and exalted them because they kept My commandments and believed in My promises. And when the time of mercy drew near, I showed My miracles through Moses.
For I have saved My people according to My promises. I fed them with the Bread of Heaven, I walked before them in a pillar of fire and a cloud, I gave them My law, and I showed them My mysteries and the future through My prophets.
Then I chose for myself the One who created all things, the Virgin who was born of a father and a mother. From her I took human flesh, conferring on this Virgin the privilege of allowing her to be born without sin, just as the first children in Paradise, by the mystery of divine love and by the common inclination and love of their parents, were to be born without shameful lust. In this way, My divinity assumed humanity from a virgin without violating her virginity.
And then, when I came as the true God and Man in the flesh, I fulfilled the law and all the scriptures that had previously spoken of Me, and began a new law, because the old law was too severe and hard to bear, and was only a picture of what was to come to pass.
