Example.
An angel of God once said to St. Bridget:
“This soul whom you have seen is in the greatest torment of purgatory, for it does not know whether it will come to eternal rest or go to damnation after its penance, and this is the justice of God. For this man had a delicate conscience and a great gift of discernment, but he used it in a carnal way out of attachment to the world, and not in a spiritual way for the benefit of his soul. He also forgot God a great deal and often neglected Him during his life. That is why his soul now suffers the fever of fire and trembles with cold. She is blind by darkness and fearful by the sight of evil spirits; deaf because of Satan’s cries, hungry and thirsty on the inside, and disgraced on the outside.
However, after his death, the Lord God granted this man the grace of not allowing Satan to touch him, for the reason that it was only for the love of God that He forgave His enemies, forgave their grievous offenses, and made friends with His greatest enemy.
Know also that only the good things which he has made, and what he has spoken, and the alms which he has given out of the goods justly acquired, and the prayers of his friends, lessen and alleviate his sufferings, as the Lord God has ordained in his righteousness. And other goods, which he has acquired less justly, and which he has distributed, are of spiritual and bodily benefit to those who have righteously possessed them, if they were worthy according to the judgments of God.”
