St. Mechtilde writes in her apparitions:
“Hell has a head above, it is enormous, and it has many terrible eyes, from which flames burst forth and embrace those poor souls who dwell in the abyss from which the Lord brought Adam and our other fathers; and which is now the place of the most grievous sufferings in purgatory to which a sinner can come.
There I saw high dignitaries, clergy and laity, in dire need and with innumerable wounds on their bodies. All those who have been there so far have been saved by God from hell, for I have not found anyone there who was to confess with the mouth of the flesh at the end of his life. Since, according to the nature of death, the external senses had already been taken away from them, their bodies lay quietly, and their will no longer lived either in their body or in their souls. They have already lost the darkness of the earth, and God has given them true recognition. Oh, how narrow is the road to Heaven! Then body and soul, not yet separated, said together, “True God, pardon me! I repent sincerely for my sins!” These are short hours, but in them God found in a hidden way many souls who seemed to be lost in public. I have never seen this happen to a man other than one who has done anything good with good will.
