During the Gospel “Missus est” (He was sent – Luke 1:26) (Gospel read for the feast of the Annunciation) Saint Mechtilde saw the Archangel Gabriel walking towards Nazareth. He carried a royal banner inscribed in golden letters, and was followed by an innumerable multitude of angels, who all arranged themselves in front of the house where the Blessed Virgin lived, and formed a kind of wall extending from earth to heaven, so that the angels were followed by the archangels, and after them came the choir of power, and the rest of the hosts were arranged in such a way that each choir surrounded the house. as if it were a wall.
Then the Lord, as the Bridegroom, came out of His chamber, beautiful before the sons of men, with the fiery choir of the Seraphim, who are nearest to God. And they surrounded the Lord and the Blessed Virgin from earth to heaven, as if with a wall and a kind of roof. And the Lord stood by the banner of the archangel, equal to the blossoming Bridegroom and the glorious youth, and waited for the Angel Gabriel to respectfully greet such a holy Virgin.
And when the Blessed Virgin Mary bowed down in love and humility and said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word,” the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove with the wings of His divine sweetness spread to the soul of the Virgin. Thus the Virgin became the Mother of the God-Man through the power of the Holy Spirit.
