In the apparitions of St. Gertrude we read the following:
When the saint once heard of the death of a monk whom she knew, she began to pray for him, and immersed in prayer, she saw in rapture the soul of the deceased quite black and hideous. And it seemed to her as if she were suffering great remorse and unspeakable sorrow. Touched by her misery and moved by the greatest pity, she began to recite the five “Our Fathers” in honour of the five wounds of the Lord Jesus, in order to obtain relief for this soul. During this sacred exercise, she greeted each wound of respect with full kisses. When, at the fifth Our Father, she showed this sign of love to the wound of the Side of the Lord Jesus, it seemed to her that she saw the Blood and Water flowing from it, joined and as if emitting a certain fragrance. From this the saint knew that the soul of the one for whom she had prayed had been greatly relieved by the intake of this salutary and refreshing fragrance.
