On one occasion, when St. Gertrude asked the Lord Jesus whether the love shown by a certain person in the last moments of his life had covered all the omissions he had committed during his life, according to what the Scriptures teach, that a man is judged according to the state of his soul in which he was at the moment of death, the Saviour replied to her:
“Since man, having left him, is approaching death, He can no longer carry out his good resolutions, for he no longer has the strength to do so, and he no longer has the courage and will to do good deeds. Therefore, it is indeed of great benefit to man if, at this moment, in My unmerited goodness, I give man good will and pour holy desires into his heart. However, this grace is not always sufficient to wipe out all the stains of the negligence committed; and this could undoubtedly be done if man, as long as he is full of health and strength, were willing to improve his life with full will.”
