On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus: “What is the use of a book containing her revelations?” The Savior said to her,
All who seek me with faithful hearts will find joy in it, those who love me will be more kindled in my love, and those who are sad will find comfort in it.”

God’s Judgment on the Soul Condemned to Purgatory

St. Bridget describes in his revelations the following judgment of God:

It seemed to me that a certain soul was brought by a knight and a negro before the Judge. I was also told, “What do you see now, everything happened to the soul at that time when it was separated from the body.
When this soul was presented to the Judge, it was alone, and not in the hand of any of those who presented it; She stood naked and wailing, for she did not know where she would be condemned. Then it seemed to me as if every word in the book was of itself in answer to everything the soul said.
In the presence of the Judge and all his armies and hosts, the knight-at-arms first said, “It is unjust that this soul should be shown the sins which it has amassed by its confession.”
In spite of this, I knew (…) then very well and completely that the knight who spoke knew everything in God, but he spoke for me in such a way that I would understand it all.
Then came the answer from the book of justice: “When this soul did penance, there was no contrition for such sins; Nor was the atonement sincere. That is why she must now suffer for what she did not remedy when she could have done so.
At these words the soul began to weep violently, but only tears were seen, but no voice was heard.
Now the King spoke to his soul and said, “Let your conscience now present those sins for which there has not been a worthy satisfaction.” At these words the soul lifted up its voice so strongly; that almost all the world could hear her, and cried out, “Woe is me, that I have not done according to the commandments of God, which I have heard and known!” and, blaming herself, she added, “I did not fear the judgment of God!”
From the book she was told, “Therefore you must fear the devil!” And the soul answered at once, trembling with fear, “I had no love for God, therefore I did so little.” Immediately she was answered from the book: “Therefore it is only right that you should draw closer to Satan than to God, because Satan has attracted and drawn you to himself by his temptations.” The soul replied, “I recognize that everything I have done has been done by the promptings of Satan.” The answer came from the book: “Justice
declares that Satan has the right to repay you with punishment and sorrow according to what you have done.” The soul said, “From my skull to my feet, there was nothing in me that I did not take pride in; for I myself have personally invented some new vain and delicious garments, others I have worn according to the custom of my country; I also washed my feet and hands, not only to keep them clean, but to make them praise as beautiful people. The book replied: “Justice says: Satan has the right to punish you as you deserve, because you have dressed yourself according to his inspirations and regulations.” The soul continued: “My mouth was often opened to reckless words, and I tried to please others, and my heart desired everything that did not deserve disgrace and ridicule in the eyes of the world.” The answer from the book was: “Therefore thy tongue shall be stretched out and torn in all directions, thy teeth shall be twisted, and all that is most abominable to thee shall be set before thee, and all that pleases thee shall be taken away. The soul said, “I rejoiced greatly that many followed my example and that many imitated my customs. The book answered: “Therefore It is just that whoever is caught in such a sin, for which you will be punished, should receive the same punishment and be brought to you, and as a result of the coming of everyone who has imitated your inventions, your sufferings will be increased.”
With these words it seemed to me as if the soul’s head had been tied with something in the shape of a hoop, and it had been pressed so tightly that the back of the head was pressed against the forehead. As a result, the eyes fell out of their cavities and hung at their roots on their cheeks. His hair had withered as if he had been burned by fire. The brain tore through and ran down the nose and ears; The tongue came out of the mouth and the teeth twisted. The bones in his hands broke and tangled between them like ropes. His hands were stripped of his skin and tied around his neck. The breasts and abdomen were pressed so tightly against the back that the ribs cracked and the heart and viscera came to the surface and tore apart. There were shins hanging on either side, and the broken bones were tied together as if they were tied into a single withers.
While I was still looking at it, the negro said, “Judge! The sins of this soul were punished according to justice. Bring us both together now, me and this soul, so that we can never be parted again.” But the armed knight said, “Listen, O Judge, who knows everything, and allow Yourself to remember the last thoughts and last inclinations which this soul had in the last hour of its life. At the last moment, she thought, “Oh, if God would prolong my life, I would gladly repent of my sins and serve Him for the rest of my life, and I would never offend Him again.” Thus, O Judge, this soul thought and desired. Remember, too, O Lord, that this soul has not lived long enough to acquire a full discernment of conscience. Therefore, O Lord, remember her youth and show her mercy!
Now came the answer from the book of justice: “Such thoughts at the end of life do not deserve the punishment of hell!” And the Judge went on to say: “Heaven will be opened to this soul for My Passion, since it has previously been cleansed from its sins as it deserves to suffer; unless by the good deeds of the living he is helped!”
