Venerable Mary of Jesus writes in her apparitions as follows:
“The Lord Jesus, having bade farewell to John, immediately went into the wilderness and came to the place which He had chosen by His most holy will. Now the Son of God began his fast, which he observed for forty days, taking no food.
After fasting, the Savior permitted the tempter to come unto Himself. At the same time, he left Lucifer in the misconception that he was only a man, but a very just and holy one. Wherefore Lucifer and his accomplices exerted all their might and malice against the overwhelming power which they saw in Jesus Christ.
Lucifer, in order to accomplish his purpose, appeared in human form, clothed with the splendor of an angel of light.
He thought that the Lord Jesus was hungry after a long fast, and so He said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell them to turn these stones into bread.” He asked this question in order to know whether the Savior of God was the Son of God. But the Savior of the world answered. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
The mysterious force of this answer had won the victory over Lucifer, but he was not yet willing to show defeat or give up the fight. The Lord Jesus also allowed Him to continue to tempt Him, and He allowed Him to be carried to Jerusalem on the roof of the temple. From there a great multitude of people could be seen, but no one could see the Lord Jesus. Satan now represented to the Savior that when the people saw that they had thrown themselves down from such a height and suffered no injury to their bodies, they would regard Him as a great miracle worker and a saint. The evil spirit again used the words of Scripture and said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written that the angels shall carry you in their arms, as God has commanded them, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” But Jesus, the source of all wisdom, answered: “It is also written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” The Savior of the world spoke this answer with unparalleled gentleness and humility. He showed himself in his majesty and serenity so superior that Lucifer, seeing such dignity and undisturbed peace, felt the humiliation of his unbridled pride again, and felt that he had suffered a new defeat.
Now the tempter decided to use a new remedy. He wanted to awaken the Savior’s pride by promising Him a portion of his dominion. To this end he carried the Saviour to a high mountain, from which a multitude of countries could be seen, and said to Him, lying presumptuously and deceitfully, “All these things that thou seest I will give unto thee, and thou shalt lie down before me, and thou shalt worship me.”
What immense audacity, even greater than foolish falsehood and deceit! Satan promises to give what he does not have and cannot give! Our Lord and King answered these lies with a commanding voice: “Go away, Satan, for it is strained, to God Himself you shall bow down and serve Him.”
With these words, “Go away, Satan!” the Lord Jesus took away from the enemy permission to tempt Him any further, and cast him and all His companions into the deepest abyss of hell.
