In the apparitions of St. Gertrude we read:
On the Solemnity of the Purification of the Most Holy Virgin Love, St. Gertrude went with the Lord to the Mount of Calvary. Here, when her soul felt great joy in the remembrance of the Passion of Jesus, it seemed to her as if she had entered through the gate at sunrise and entered a magnificent temple. In it, she saw St. Simeon on the steps of the altar, pronouncing these words in prayer: “When will he come? When will I finally see Him? Will I ever see him come? Will he find me still alive?”
These and other similar sighs were repeated over and over again by the holy old man, and then, delighted in God, he suddenly turned and saw before him the Blessed Virgin carrying in her arms the little Jesus, the most beautiful of human children.
As soon as Simeon turned his eyes to the Child, he was enlightened by the Holy Spirit and knew at once that he was the Saviour of the world. He took Him in his arms, sang the great hymn, “Now, Lord, let Thy servant go in peace, and in the midst of the words, ‘For my eyes have seen,’ he kissed the Child tenderly, and at the words, ‘Whom thou hast prepared,’ he lifted Him up above the Ark of the Covenant and offered Him to God the Father, as the future salvation and life of all nations.
At that moment, the Ark of the Covenant shone forth with the most beautiful light, and there appeared an incomparably beautiful image of the Child Jesus, surrounded by the splendor of the rays, as a sign that Jesus is the fulfilment and complement of all the sacrifices of the old and new Law. And the saintly old man, when he saw this light, cried out in his fervent love, “Light to enlighten the Gentiles!” Then he gave the baby Jesus to his Blessed Mother and said to her, “And your soul will be pierced by a sword.”
Now the Blessed Virgin has offered for the Divine Child two perfectly white doves, as a sign of the innocent life of the faithful, who, in simplicity and serious meditation, turn away from all evil and incline to good, and thus follow in the footsteps and example of the saints. And all those who live in this way seem, so to speak, to ransom the little Jesus with their gifts. Especially when they reward and perfect all that our Lord has expressly commanded His faithful to complete.
