According to the apparitions of the Venerable Mary of Jesus:
It seemed to Pilate that such a horrible sight as Jesus represented would stir and touch the hearts of the ungrateful Jewish people. Therefore he caused the Saviour to be led to a window, where all the people could see Him standing beaten with scourges, profaned, crowned with thorns, and clothed in mocking royal robes. At the same time, Pilate turned to the people and cried out: “Behold, here is a man! You see the man you regard as your enemy, now you need not fear him!”
But the hatred of the Jews could only be satisfied by the death of the Lord Jesus, and so they began to cry out, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate once more tried to resist the Jews, but they threatened him with losing Caesar’s favor, exclaiming: “If you let him who claims to be king of the Jews go, you will be Caesar’s enemy!” Pilate was frightened by this threat. He sat in a tribunal called gabatha, and as a judge, the unjust, pronounced the sentence of death on the Lord Jesus.
