On one occasion St. Mechtilde said to the Lord Jesus:
“Ah, most beloved Lord and Brother! Pray the heavenly Father for me!” Then the Lord Jesus lifted up His hands and prayed, and said, “Thy wrath hath been transferred upon me, and Thy fears have troubled me.” (Psalm 87:17). St. Mechtilde, hearing this, feared that it might be a satanic delusion. Then the Lord said to her, “I am the one who appeases the wrath of the Father, and who has reconciled man to God through my blood. But His wrath was passed upon Me, for He did not spare Me, His only begotten, but delivered Me into the hands of the wicked. And I have satisfied His wrath so greatly, that if a man wills, the wrath of God will never be aggravated against him.”
On one occasion, when a procession was being made to ask God for good weather, St. Gertrude heard the Son of God from the Cross, who was being carried before the procession, say to His Father: “I come with the whole host of My army to ask You, O heavenly Father, in the same form in which I have reconciled the whole human race to You.” And St. Gertrude saw that these words appeased and pleased the heavenly Father as if he had received a satisfaction a hundredfold greater than the sins of all men.
