On one occasion St. Bridget witnessed the following conversation between the Lord Jesus and His Blessed Mother:
Mary said: “My Son! Since I have received mercy from You, I ask You for mercy and help for the destitute. There are four places. The first is Heaven, in which the angels and the souls of the saints have no need of anything but You, whom they possess, for in You they have
all good. The second place is hell, and its inhabitants are full of malice and excluded from all mercy. Therefore, nothing good can pass to them anymore. The third place is purgatory, and those who are in it need of a threefold mercy, because they suffer a threefold suffering. They experience sadness by hearing, because they hear only painful screams, cries, and misery. They suffer through sight, because they see nothing but their misery. They are tormented by feeling, for they are scorched in the midst of unbearable fire and heavy punishment.
Grant them, my Lord and my Son, your mercy for my requests.”
The Son of God answered: “I will gladly grant them a threefold mercy for you. First, their hearing will be relieved, and their sight will be softened. Their punishment will become easier to bear and weaker, and besides, those who are in the highest fiery torment in the present hour will pass into the middle, and those who are in the average will go to the lightest, and those who are in the lightest will go to eternal rest.”
The Blessed Mother said, “Honor and glory be to You, My Lord! The fourth place is the world; Its inhabitants need three things: first, repentance for their sins, second, reparation, and third, help to do good works.” The Son of God answered: “To everyone who calls on your name and puts his hopes in you, and at the same time has a determination to make amends for his errors, these three things will be given; and the
Kingdom of Heaven. For the sweetness of Your words is so great to Me that I cannot refuse what You ask of Me. All the more so because you want nothing but what I want. You are like a shining burning flame with the help of which extinguished lights are lit and those that have not wanted to be lit for a long time are burning. In the same way, through Your love, which entered My Heart and drew Me to You, those who have died in sin will be made alive again; and the indifferent, who are black as smoke, will be strengthened in My love.”
