Once upon a time the Lord Jesus said to St. Bridget, “
How can one know my spirit, when there are two spirits, one good and the other evil?” I will tell you: My spirit is warm and full of twofold goodness. First, it makes man desire nothing but God, and then it gives man the greatest humility and contempt of the world.
But the evil spirit is cold and hot. He is cold, for he makes all that is divine bitter. It is fervent because it subjects man to the lust tendencies of the flesh and the pride of the world, and it awakens in man the desire for his own glory. He comes gently, like a friend, but is a real biting dog. He also comes as a sweet comforter, but he is the worst traitor.
When he comes to you, tell him, “I don’t want you, because whoever unites with you will have a bad end.” And when a good spirit comes to you, say to him, “Come, O Lord, as fire and set my heart on fire; for though I am unworthy to have Thee, yet I need Thee to make me better through Thee, for without Thee I am nothing.”
