Once upon a time the Lord Jesus said to St. Mechtilde:
It is good for a person to be present at Mass in the church. If, for example, he cannot do this because of a great crowd, let him at least come so close that he can hear the words spoken by the priest at Mass. For St. Paul says, “The Word of God is alive, efficacious, and penetrating.”
The Word of God enlivens the soul and instills spiritual joys into it, as we see in all those who, although they do not always understand what the priest is reading in the Mass, nevertheless experience joy in spirit and an invitation to repentance. The Word of God also strengthens the soul to virtue and to all good things, and it penetrates and enlightens the interior.
If a man has an obstacle, whether through sickness or obedience or any other just cause, and cannot be present and hear the Word of God in the church, then wherever he is, I am present with him and I am with him.
