On one occasion, when St. Gertrude accused herself before the Lord of the variety and the great number of her sins, and as if in a kind of despair she said: “Look upon me, O merciful Lord, and put an end to my wickedness, which I do without measure,” the Lord said to her: “Why do you speak of your sins so desperately, when, as the Scriptures say, “love covers the multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8)?”
