When the monastic congregation was receiving Holy Communion on the feast of Corpus Christi, Saint Mechtilde saw the Lord standing as a King full of majesty, in the place of the priest. Each of the nuns walked before Him and held a burning lamp before Him, which illuminated her face with its light. She then understood through the Holy Spirit that these lamps mean the hearts of those who receive Holy Communion, and the oil in the lamps is the goodness of the Heart of God that flows into the hearts of those who receive this Angelic Bread. The flame means the fire of love. For the Most Holy Sacrament gives all those who receive Him worthily the strength to do all good things and ignites them in God’s love.
