On one occasion St. Mechtilde asked the Lord Jesus: “What is the use of a book containing her revelations?” The Savior said to her,
All who seek me with faithful hearts will find joy in it, those who love me will be more kindled in my love, and those who are sad will find comfort in it.”

God’s Mercy and Justice

The Lord Jesus once said to St. Bridget:
I am the Creator of all things. It is as if I had two cards in front of me. On one is written mercy, on the other justice. Whoever is moved to repentance by his sins, and who resolves not to commit them again, mercy speaks to him, and through it the Holy Spirit speaks to him to do good works. Whoever would gladly turn away from the vanity of the world will be made even more zealous by the Holy Spirit. Whoever is willing to die for me, even if he is ready to die for me, his Spirit will burn so strongly that he will be completely in me, and I in him.
On the second card is written righteousness, which says: “Whoever does not correct himself while he has time, and willfully turns away from God, will not be defended by the Father, will not be gracious to him, neither will the Holy Ghost inflame him.”
So, as long as time is on your side, consider the card of justice diligently. For everyone who is saved must be cleansed either by water or by fire; that is, either by slight penitential nuisances to man in this life, or by fire in the life to come; until it is completely cleansed.
