One day the Lord Jesus said to Saint Bridget:
Virginity is good and is the highest thing, because it makes man like an angel if he observes it sensibly and seriously. However, if there is one thing without the other, i.e. virginity of the body without virginity of the heart, then such virginity is dwarfed. For a humble, pious and married woman is more pleasing to Me than a conceited and shameless virgin. A married woman who is modest and lives according to her own rules in the fear of God may also have the same merits as a chaste and humble virgin.
There were three women: Susanna, Judith and Thecla. The first was a wife, the second a widow, and the third a spinster. The lives of these three women were not equal and their intentions were not the same, and yet they earned equal merit.
When Susanna was falsely accused, she was more ready to die for the love of God than to allow herself to be stained against her duty. But because she feared Me as the Omnipresent, she deserved to be released and glorified in her release.
When Judith saw the contempt and misfortune of her people, she was so sad that for the love of God she not only exposed herself to shame and harm, but was even ready to suffer for My sake.
Thecla, however, who was a maiden, preferred to endure severe suffering rather than utter a single word against Me.
These three women, although they did not live equally, achieved equal merits. Virgin, widow or married woman; all of them will please Me equally, as long as all their desire is directed towards My glory and they live accordingly.
