On one occasion, when St. Gertrude wished to know something of the merits of St. Agnes, that gracious virgin whom she had loved so tenderly from her youth, the Lord granted her wish. He lifted up His hand and showed her the saint in a very charming form, resting, as a sign of His extraordinary innocence, on the Heart of God. In this way he made known to her, i.e., to St. Gertrude, the efficacy of the words of the Magi: “Chastity brings us nearer to God” (Wise 6), for
St. Agnes rested so close to the Divine Heart that it seemed as if no one in Heaven could equal her in innocence and happiness.
