Saint Paul said to Saint Bridget:
You, my daughter, compared me in prayer to a lion raised among wolves, which was miraculously snatched from the wolves. Truly, daughter, I was a ravenous wolf, but the Lord God made me a lamb from the wolf, and this for two reasons: first, because of His great love, which makes His vessels out of the unworthy, and His friends out of sinners; secondly: as a result of the prayer of St. the martyr Stephen.
I will show you what state of mind I was in when Saint was being stoned. Stephen and why I deserved his prayer. In fact, I felt neither joy nor pleasure in the martyrdom of Saint. Stephen, nor did I envy him his fame. Although I wanted him to die, because in my opinion he had no true faith. So when I noticed that he bore his suffering with great devotion and patience, I felt sorry that he was an infidel; while in fact he was extremely faithful. I, on the other hand, was completely blind and unfaithful, but I had compassion on him and begged God, praying with all my heart that his bitter suffering would help him to achieve splendor and a crown in Heaven. For this reason his prayer was of great benefit to me, for through it I got rid of the company of many wolves and became a gentle lamb.
Therefore it is good to pray for everyone; for the prayer of the righteous benefits those who stand closer to God and are more capable of receiving grace.
